Illumination at Night

Description:

  • Although not a Christian nation, the Japanese celebrate Christmas in their own way. There is a materialistic consumerism side to it, with people giving each other presents, and generally the real meaning behind the celebration of Christmas is not understood. Omotesando Avenue, the Champs Elysees of Tokyo, is grandly illuminated for 19 days to accommodate Japanese couples who have made Christmas in Japan the time for the kind of love reserved for Valentine's Day. The spectacular lights are worth seeing each evening of the festive season. In recent years, the residents association has spoken out against the lights, so check with the tourist office that they are scheduled to go on as planned. There's no admission fee.
