Jokaku-ji Temple

Description:

  • This modest temple is known for its memorial gravestones. A large one, for example, was erected in 1860 for women who used to work in the area's inns. When these women died, they were often "discarded" at this temple, thus the nick-name "dumping temple." There is also a memorial for star-crossed lovers who drowned themselves nearby and another for a famous Naito Shinjuku courtesan called Shiraito. Admission: Free
