Kan'ei-ji Pagoda

Description:

  • Formerly attached to a temple of the same name, the original Kan'ei-ji pagoda was erected in 1631. It is doubtful however, if the original plans included relocating it to the middle of a zoo—which is where it now lies! Fortunately you can see the pagoda from the approach to Toshogu Shrine without having to enter the zoo. The 36.4 meter high pagoda is mainly lacquered with tiles made of clay. The exception is the fifth tier which is made of bronze.
