Samboji Temple

Description:

  • It is believed that this Shingon-sect (meaning "True Word") Buddhist temple was founded in 1477. An attraction here is a replication of the tour frequently made by pilgrims to Shikoku Island—stops at 88 different holy places. At this Tokyo temple, stones represent each of the Shikoku stops on this particular "pilgrimage." The temple grounds include a gate which once belonged to Kaishu Katsu, a naval minister in the Meiji Era.
