- Shimoda Yamatokan is a deluxe resort hotel, close to the beaches of the Izu Peninsula. Shimoda City is famous as the site where Commodore Perry's "black ships" dropped anchor in 1853. On May 16-18 the town holds its popular Kurofune Matsuri, or blackship festival, with brass bands and a parade.
