Shinagawa Jinja Shrine

Description:

  • The hill on which this shrine rests was created by lava ash from Mount Fuji. The stone gate (tori) here is unusual because dragons are incorporated on the pillars--not a common depiction in the Tokyo region, where tori typically have smooth, unadorned surfaces made of wood. An interesting grave here is that of Taisuke Itagaki who was an advocate for commoners during the Meiji period.
