Suwa Jinja Shrine

Description:

  • This shrine, founded in 1205, was the subject matter of a famous wood-block print by the artist Hiroshige (1797-1858). Indeed, during the Edo Period (pre-1868 Tokyo) the location of the shrine was a popular all-day picnic spot--with a magnificent panorama encompassing Tsubayama, the Sumida River and rice paddies in between. These days the tracks of Japan Railways interfere somewhat with the scenery of former times! Admission: Free.
