Togenuki Jizo (Koganji Temple)

Description:

  • The Togenuki Jizo or Koganji Temple is located along the Sugamo Street in the neighborhood of Toshima. This temple is very well known among locals and out of towner's as a place that cures the ill. Which is why numerous devotees gather here daily seeking freedom from their respective illnesses; offering prayers to Enmei Ksitigarbha, who is believed to cure people of any sickness. Legend also has it that a housemaid once swallowed a needle and was cured by eating a paper with the picture of Enmei Ksitigarbha on it, hence people often eat the paper in order to get cured. A prominent feature at the temple however is the statue of Arai Kannon at the main gate, worshipped by a large number of devotees. The temple comes to life during the Grand Festival of Togenuki Jizo held every year.
