Description:
Balzac's is a gourmet coffee house, but that's where any similarity to Starbucks ends. Balzac's chooses each of its relatively few locations based on (in their words) "historic character and uniqueness," and its Distillery District location certainly lives up to that claim. It's in an old brick building which was once part of the 19th century Gooderham and Worts distillery. Inside, the walls are exposed brick decorated with eclectic artwork, and the room is open all the way up to the underside of the roof, allowing space for a huge chandelier. There is additional seating in an upper gallery, reached up a flight of wooden stairs. The coffee, sugar and cocoa are all Fair Trade and of high quality, and the ambiance adds its own unique flavour.
