I've been a longtime fan of Far Niente, so I was curious when this restaurant opened in the restaurant's basement. The space used to be a bar, and I wondered how a windowless subterranean restaurant would survive. It turns out that the food here is so incredible -- and moderately priced -- that I forgot about the lack of a view. Four advertises itself as having a "balanced approach to guilt-free dining," and it turns out that good-for-you can mean delicious. Every dish on the menu is under 650 calories, from the ocean trout with beluga lentils and sherry-mustard-dressed salad to the beef tenderloin with roasted root vegetables (those are both main courses, by the way). Service is friendly and thoughtful. My only caveat is not to go too early: before 7pm, the bar area is packed with noisy Financial District types who are used to thinking of the spot as a watering hole. (In fairness, the cocktails are hard to resist, particularly the pernod-chambord-raspberry one.)
