  • It is well-known that fine food is really the French "raison-d'être," and Toulouse will certainly not disappoint with its assortment of fabulous restaurants offering exceptional regional delicacies and world-renowned wines. For a real taste of Toulouse during your stay, make sure you try its cassoulet stew, which eclectically mixes together duck, goose, pork and beans.

For the classic French cafes and restaurants, head to Place Arnaud-Bernaud or Place du Capitole, as both squares are inundated with outside sitting areas, serving food and drinks in a truly picturesque surrounding of classic Toulouse architecture. For a romantic place to dine, the waterfront makes for a perfect setting and offers some very elegant bistros overlooking the River Garonne. Up-market brasseries are plentiful along Rue de la Colombette, while cheap food markets bestow tempting local produce in and around Place Victor Hugo.

The most recommendable menu in town is to be found at the restaurant of master chef Michel Sarran. The diverse menu has fed some impressive mouths, from the president of France to various top showbiz names. The menu covers the most treasured delicacies of French gastronomy: foie gras, oysters or even tenderloin of roasted wild boar from the Bigorre region, which is sure to wow even the most hardened food critic. Otherwise, by far the most aesthetically impressive restaurant is Les Jardins de l'Opera, which is set in the 18th century Florentine courtyard of the Grand Hotel de l'Opera. The dining area is a series of salons, many of which face beautiful gardens and a reflecting pool.

If you're looking for eateries with a little less flash, there is no shortage of gourmet restaurants serving excellent food for reasonable prices. La Bohème is a charming basement restaurant with French and local specialties in the romantic setting of an old cellar that dates back to the 17th century. If you want to try something different, Les 2 Pachas is a trendy restaurant offering North African cuisine in a setting reminiscent of a Moroccan riad.
