Hotel am Schloss

Description:

  • One of the most charming and atmospheric hotels in town is a group of steep-gabled antique buildings in the town's historic core; each is accented in summer with window boxes loaded with flowers, and the oldest dates to 1491. You'll register in the main building and be assigned a room, and if it's within either of the two very old, and very historic, outbuildings, you'll get a key for access to their respective entrances. None of the three buildings has an elevator, but each has thick walls, and each has benefited from a recent renovation that retains the old-fashioned charm while adding modern conveniences and a scattering of simple, traditional, and noncontroversial furnishings.

The main building contains at least half of the hotel's accommodations, as well as its restaurant, where Swabian food is served daily at both lunch and dinner (closed Tues Oct-Apr). Main courses range from 10€ to 20€ ($16-$32). An enduring specialty is Maultaschen, a traditional regional dish resembling large ravioli that are stuffed with a mixture of spices and minced meats. Staff here is cordial but no-nonsense and hardworking.
