General Hitchcock Campground

  • NileGuide Expert Says:

If you're not interested in staying in a crowded campground, there's an area just a couple of miles further up the mountain where camping is allowed outside of campgrounds.

  • Description:

    • This small campground is tucked away just off the Catalina Highway, along the rocky streambed of upper Bear Canyon. The nearby granite strata have weathered into pinnacles, spires, arches and other outlandish shapes, a number of which can be seen through breaks in the tree cover that shades the campground.

Campsites at General Hitchcock nestle under a canopy of ponderosa pines, junipers and oaks near the stream that usually only flows after a rain or during the Spring snow melt. All campsites are far enough from the Catalina Highway to offer peace and quiet.

Tucked away in a canyon, this campground offers sheltered units in a shady setting along a picturesque streambed. Facilities include 11 single-family units with tables and grills, and one barrier free unit. There are no hookups or drinking water. Please carry out everything you bring. A Catalina Mountain Pass is required.
