Yes, it is safe. Nothing to do with the situation in the North part of the country. Normal precautions apply, as they would anywhere. Out after dark, stay in well lighted places and in a group. Day time, don't leave your belongings unattended. Lock your car. Don't let strangers in your room. Tulum beach is a very laid back and friendly place.

It is as safe as going to Venice Beach California. The violence in Mexico is primarily located in the north of the country for control of the largest drug consumer market in the world (ie the United States). Just as anywhere in the world, do not leave your doors open or unlocked or belongings unattended and you will not encounter any breakin's or theft. I was on the beach of Tulum yesterday and it was vibrant and well attented. As long as one is NOT trying to buy drugs or seek out shady elements you should be more than adecuetly safe. I have lived in this area for approximatly 30 years and still find it safer than when I lived in Miami, New York City or Los Angeles. As long as one is vigilant of their belongings and child (as you would be at home) your travel plans should go exceptionally well. Happy sailing!!!
