Description:
- Punic epitaph and vegetation cover the ground of the famous Tophet of Carthage (8th century BCE up to the Third Punic War). Thousands of funeral urns containing the ashes of toddlers have been buried in this Punic sanctuary. Was it a barbarous place of worship where children were sacrificed or a mere made-sacred children cemetery? Some Roman writings and the novel Salammbô by Gustave Flaubert concur with the first option. However, some archeologists now think that those children were dead without having been sacrificed to the Punic-Phoenician divinities of Baal Hamon and his whife Tanit. Admission is TD 7- this price includes the access to the other sites of the Archeological Park of Carthage. Hours vary seasonally.
