Palatine Gate

• Between the Piazza della Republica and Palazzo Reale sits the Porta Palatine, one of the four Roman city gates of Turin. Built around 25 BC, This was the Northern Gate and approaching from Via XX Settembre you can see the imposing twin towered gate rising up adjacent to the remains of the original Roman walls. It opened out onto the Cardo Maximus, the north south axis road, which terminated on the other side of the city at Porta Mamorea which was demolished in 1635. Between 1872 and 1934 restoration was undertaken to achieve the original appearance after centuries of structural additions and neglect. In 1724 the gate was used as a prison in 1877 as the City Music School.
