Turin: Best Shopping

Day Note:

Shopping in Turin could not be easier. If its cold or wet don't worry, the rich and powerful have left a unique legacy, over 16 km of porticoes to walk under. In some places the porticoes even continue over road crossings, this was done to protect members of the Royal Family on their walkabouts! From the marble of Via Roma and the grey stone of Via Po to the slightly more functional porticoes outside the central zone, Turin's porticoes are a unique urban feature,...

    Description:

In the heart of Turin, Galleria Subalpina—its complete name is Subalpine Industry Arcade—was built in 1873 as a shopping arcade by architect Pietro Carrera. He designed it in glass, marble and iron, following the pattern of contemporary Liberty architecture. The arcade connects Piazza Castello to Via Battisti and Piazza Carlo Alberto. It is one of the most elegant places in town, housing flowerbeds and several shops. Among them are the Caffè Baratti, one of the most famous city's cafés, a restaurant, an antiquarian bookshop and a cinema. In 1878, Mark Twain visited and loved it. The German philosopher Nietzsche lived there. Turin people just believe that strolling in the arcade brings good luck! - Maria Frullini

Day Note:

Today start at the Piazza Castello and look for Via Garibaldi which you will find on the north western side of the Piazza. This street runs for over 1 km and is a favourite shopping destination for the Torinesi, especially on Saturday afternoons.

Don't miss 'Osteria No.1' at number 59, one of Turin's best wine merchants, a good place for lunch. In the afternoon head for Lingotto on Via Nizza, formerly Fiat's major production plant. Remember the Mini's on the...

    Eataly

    Eataly - Turin
    •

    Description:

Eataly in Turin is a food and wine centre where visitors can buy, taste and learn about high-quality food and drink. Set in the heart of the city, close to the Lingotto convention and shopping centre, you will find Eataly, (yes I know in marketing terms the name is a bit corny but wait until you go inside!) because you will find over 11,000 square metres of food and wine heaven split over three floors.

Created in what was once the former Carpano vermouth factory there is a vast marketplace. This is much more than just a food store, the produce on display is closely related to its own history and culture, after all the Slow Food Movement was founded here in Piedmont, in nearby Bra.

There are also eight themed restaurants, two café-bars and an agrigelateria ice-cream stand inside Eataly and every day you can try over 100 different dishes based on Eataly's market products.

    Description:

The Osteria is located within a few minutes' walk from the Lingotto building. Usually FIAT is the acronym for the Italian car company, but here it stands for Fai Infretta A Tavola—that is, "make it quick at the table"—the Italian version of fast food in a typical home-cooking trattoria, with fast service and a very good quality-to-price ratio. Besides ordering a la carte, they serve a fixed-price menu with a choice among three first-course and three main-course options. Pasta e Fagioli, or pasta and beans, their most popular specialty, deserves a special mention. - Maria Frullini
