  • If you were to ask the Venice tourism office about things to do in the city, you'd likely be given a long list of "must-see" sights and attractions - but only a fraction of those are actually what most people would consider "must-see." Located next to the Basilica di San Marco, the Doge's Palace has been the symbol of Venice's political life and public administration for hundreds of years. Generally referred to as "La Salute," this crown jewel of 17th-century baroque architecture proudly reigns at a commercially and aesthetically important point, almost directly across from the Piazza San Marco, where the Grand Canal empties into the lagoon. Located in the very same Piazza San Marco, for which it is named, the San Marco Campanile, or St. Mark's Bell tower, soars 98.5 meters high with spectacular panoramic views of the orange rooftops of Venice and, on a clear day, the snow-capped Alps seem at your very fingertips. Marvel at masterpieces, get about in a gondola, then relax with a gelato on your way to enjoy all of Venice's things to do.
