Description:
Three generations of Stainers have been behind the front desk here since 1967 (for centuries prior to that, the Fontana was a convent for Austrian nuns), and their warmth seems to pour out of the lobby's leaded-glass windows. The four-story hotel offers a pensione-like family atmosphere coupled with a crisp, professional operation. Rooms have lovely antique furnishings but a decided lack of wattage in the overhead lights; the two best on the upper floor have private terraces. There is currently no elevator to those beautiful views of San Zaccaria's 15th-century facade, but as this edition went to press the owners were beginning the first phase of construction on one.
