Basilica of Saint Anthony

Basilica of Saint Anthony - Venice

  • Description:

    • Any one-day excursion from Venice to Padua (trains get there in about half an hour and run quite often) must include a visit to the Basilica of Saint Anthony, which has been an important pilgrimage destination for centuries. The construction of the church took over 70 years, from the first half of 1200 to 1300. The Treasure Chapel, the Ark with the tomb of the Saint, and the many cloisters make this church an outstanding example of religious architecture. The Main Altar is adorned by bronze statues and panels that were sculpted by Donatello. Behind the Main Altar, do not miss his stone Deposition: they are considered masterpieces of Renaissance art. In front of the church, the bronze equestrian statue that portrays the warlord Gattamelata was also cast by Donatello. It is considered one the first equestrian monuments since classical antiquity. During the summer, the Basillica extends its closing time to 19:45. -Maria Frullini
