NileGuide Expert Says:
The Chiesa del Redentore is particularly beautiful when lit up at night during varying holidays and events. And being on the island of Giudecca just off of the main island of Venice, the Chiesa del Redentore is usually not very crowded.
Description:
- Located on the long island of Giudecca just south of the main island of Venice, the Chiesa del Redentore (Church of the Redeemer) stands as a reminder of gratitude for lifting the plague off the city in 1576 which caused the death of one third of the population of the city. A masterpiece of harmony and proportion, classically styled with simplicity of lines and workmanship, contrasts nicely with the usually ornate style of most other churches in Venice. During the third weekend of July, a temporary but steady bridge of boats is constructed from the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Salute to the Chiesa del Redentore for the Festa del Redentore (Celebration of the Redeemer). Venetians, in a very devout manner, trek across the bridge the morning of that third Sunday in July to enter the Chiesa del Redentore in gratitude and thanksgiving even to this day.
