Description:
- This church is located on the river bank of the same name. It was built as a monastery by the Benedictines in 1046 and was handed over to the Venetian Friars of St George in alga in 1442. The building of the present-day church was started in 1477 and finished by Sanmicheli, who built the presbytery the dome and the bell tower that was unfinished because of a ban placed by the military. The façade is dressed in white marble and divided in two parts. There is one nave inside which is covered by a vaulted buttressed ceiling, and has four chapels on either side. The church is adorned by several remarkable painting by 16th-century Venetian masters. Those which deserve particular consideration are the Martyrdom of St. George by Veronese, the Baptism of Christ and the Pentecost by Tintoretto, and hung over the main altar is a copy of Veronese's Miracolo di San Barnaba, the original is in the Louvre in Paris thanks to Napoleon's pillaging.
