Matetsi Water Lodge

Description:

• Located 40km (25 miles) upstream from the falls (30 min. by complimentary daily shuttle), on a 73,500-hectare (181,545-acre) reserve with access to the adjacent Zambezi National Park, this highly recommended lodge comprises three small, separate camps (each with only six suites), built right on the Zambezi River. A stay here combines a safari experience with a visit to the falls, so plan to spend 2 nights. Previously a hunting concession area, Matetsi is now home to herds of buffalo, elephant, and sable antelope, as well as such predators as lion, hyena, and leopard. Each privately located and luxurious suite -- with teak fittings, canopied king-size beds, and enormous bathrooms -- has its own plunge pool and deck overlooking the river (similar accommodations in South Africa and Botswana would cost much more).
