What better place to enjoy music than in the city where many of history's greatest musicians lived and worked? Music and the performing arts have been an integral part of Viennese culture for centuries, and any visitor should take an evening or two to immerse themselves in a piece of that culture.
The largest theaters in Vienna are the Burgtheater, the Theater in der Josefstadt and the Volkstheater Wien. The Burgtheater is one of the city's historical wonders, and it was the host to the premieres of several Mozart operas. Opera has remained a key part of nightlife in Vienna, and the Vienna State Opera is world-renowned.
Since these performances are so well known, tickets can be highly coveted and very hard to come by. Some can be obtained in advance on the Internet or by mail, but attendees frequently find themselves relegated to standing room. If standing in line for hours or shelling out to attend a performance at one of the big theaters isn't your cup of tea, there are plenty of smaller theaters, clubs and art houses where you can catch a performance.
Of course, there are also more contemporary music shows and other performances. Huge arenas and smaller venues host the range of international headliners that come through all of the world's big cities on their global tours. Unusual indie and alternative Viennese and international bands play in small, sometimes underground, clubs filled with local fans. Electronic and house music are also popular in Viennese clubs, and the city has quite a few local DJs to boast about.
The Vienna bar scene runs the gamut. One of the more unique Viennese bar experiences can be had in an old keller, a cozy albeit occasionally cold cellar watering hole. Or, for a more lively evening with a bar feel, head to the Bermuda Triangle area (near the river in central Vienna) and try a couple of wines or cocktails at one of the small and eclectic bars that stay open late.
