What may first strike you about Vienna is the confluence of its modernity and historical beauty, and the hotels here are no exception to that rule. There are hotels housed in buildings with luxurious historic facades, yet they still have everything you'd expect from top-notch modern accommodations.
Most likely you'll want to find a place to stay within the Ringstrasse in the Inner City, where much of the best Vienna sightseeing can be had. This is also where many of the city's most high-class hotels are, and it can be hard to find a room during the busiest tourist seasons.
For a cheaper stay, one that's off the beaten path, or just a guaranteed room even in high season, look outside the Ringstrasse. Outside the Ring, you can actually position yourself near some more unusual sights and see more of Viennese day-to-day life. Another remarkable thing about Vienna is the abundance of green spaces throughout the city. Other great hotel locations to keep in mind are those on the edge of a park like the Resselpark or Belvedere Garden.
There is also an abundance of smaller boutique hotels to the southwest of the Ring, in Mariahilf and Neubau. These neighborhoods were somewhat rundown several decades ago, and then flourished as a center for artists and students; now they are among the most exciting and chicest areas in town. Or, if you want to enjoy the outdoors but still be within a several-minute metro ride from the Ring, opt for a stay in the 2nd district (Leopoldstadt).
Wieden (4th district) is a good choice for upscale hotels and lots of lively restaurant and entertainment options. Just south of the Ring, this is one of the city's nicer residential neighborhoods and home to its most exciting outdoor market. For a quieter stay, the neighborhood of Margareten (5th district) to the south is a residential working-class area where you can find some real gems to stay in and get a break on prices from the areas closer to central Vienna.
