Things to Do Near Schonbrunn Palace, Vienna, Austria

  • Vienna is made up of many different neighborhoods, all with their own charm. With each designated with both a name and number, it's easy to figure out where you want to spend your time.

    In the 1st district, which is the Innere Stadt (inside the Ringstrasse), you'll find many of the sightseeing opportunities that Vienna has in store. Arrive along the outside and wander in on foot, as these cobblestone streets are full of hidden art, cafes and shops. Open-air markets are common, too, and are exciting to explore. Around the district's perimeter, along the Ring itself, you'll find even more. The University, theaters, operas, museums and city hall are along this route, to name just a few. Farther out from the ring, you can find wide-open green spaces and parks, palaces, and more museums and performance spaces.

    The palaces and museums of Vienna are likely its most famous places to visit, with palaces ranging from the impressive stature of the Hofburg to the breathtaking Baroque Belvedere. The museums hold their own, too, with innumerable examples of European art housed in the more traditional museums and exciting modern art on display throughout the Museums' quarter. While on foot, you will also come across monuments and landmarks scattered about the city. These are mainly focused on historical eras, and some are quite controversial (like the Monument Against War and Fascism).

    Thinking about renting a car to get around the city while you're here? Don't bother. Vienna has an excellent public transport system, and you can buy entire-network passes for a day or a couple of days. This is the ideal way to get around from sight to sight, as there are easy routes to and stops at all of the major museums, landmarks, parks, etc. Another easy and inexpensive way to get around that's an activity all on its own is to rent a bicycle. This can be done at rental shops for a couple of euros, and riding along the river can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors and see a lot of the city.
