Wedding Fountain

Description:

  • Amidst the cars and horse-drawn carriages clogging the Hoher Markt stands Fischer von Erlach's Vermählungsbrunnen (Marriage Fountain), built between 1729-32 on the orders of Emperor Leopold I to give thanks for his son's, the future Josef I's, safe return from the Spanish Wars of Succession. Curiously enough it depicts the marriage of Mary and Josef, officiated by a high priest, flanked by Corinthian columns and topped with a gilded sunburst obviously the architect had an extremely fertile imagination.
