I plan a new visit to Vienna. I've been to most major sights but I'm interested in 'off the beaten track' attractions. Any suggestions?

Here's a neat little article I found today in the Austrian Times on making a Danube River cruise. It's a great thing to do during rainy weather: Vienna River (Danube) Cruises By Alessia De Silva It's going to be raining a lot over the next few days according to the weatherman, and although you might be one of those that wants to avoid too much water it's actually a good time to take to the water. Sightseeing under an umbrella and in the wind is never much fun – but although Vienna is not Venice it does offer several mini cruises where you can eat drink and be merry as the city – or if you prefer the countryside – sails by. At the end of the day it's great for groups – you can chat and enjoy it as the sites are highlighted and passed. It's also great for those who like to take it easy. I opted for the city tour rather than heading to one of the outlying towns such as Durnstein with its impressive rock castle where King Richard was once held while Robin Hood was raising the ransom – or so the legend goes! But the DDSG’s Blue Danube Sightseeing Vienna Cruise was shorter and fitted my schedule – three-and-a-half hours that provided the perfect opportunity for me to really view the picturesque city I am visiting for the summer. The crew were welcoming – not a given in a city in which they take pride in their grumpy waiters - and each seat offered a clear view of the surroundings. Not speaking German was no problem with commentaries in many languages, and lunch was also readily available with a wide choice from the menu, including the ‘Wiener Schnitzel’ for a fully Viennese experience. As a single person on this trip – it would have been better to have a pal to chat to during the quieter moments – especially at the locks that seemed to take an age. If you are alone I'd say the option to book a half-round trip, which lasts just under two hours and drops you off at Reichsbrücke – may be the one for you. It is not exactly a world cruise, but I guarantee you will not be disappointed by the opportunity to relax and take in an easy sightseeing experience.
