Description:
Vienna isn't the cheapest city in the world, but it's possible to fit in the most beautiful and famous of the city's sights without spending too much. Staying in a hotel outside the Ring, utilizing the fabulous Vienna transportation system, and figuring out how to get museum and opera tickets on the cheap are the key to this low-budget vacation.
Day Note:
Check into the Apartments Vienna, fairly inexpensive for its location just south of the Ring and within walking distance of lots of interesting landmarks. Start out the day walking around the Ringstrasse, where many of Vienna's most notable buildings are, or take the tram. Public transportation in Vienna is extensive, convenient, and inexpensive. Tickets for buses, trains, & trams are interchangeable, and it's easiest to just get a network ticket that's good...read more
Day Note:
Just south of the Secession building on the Linke Wienzeile is the Naschmarkt, a open-air market where there are a huge range of inexpensive food vendors of every kind. The Secession (6 euros) building, a beautiful gallery, is in the area, as well as several interesting monuments. Rush tickets to the Staatsoper, or State Opera, are standing room and available 90 minutes before the show starts. Tickets can be bought for only a few euros, but prepare to wait...read more

Description:
Traditional Viennese café right behind St Stephen's Cathedral and a paradise for pastry-fans. An "extended living room" (and that is what cafés traditionally are for many Viennese people) the way you want it: Cosy, elegant and almost always open. Freshly baked in their own pastry shop, Diglas serves nearly every sweet Viennese delicacy you can think of. But in case you have not got a very sweet tooth, it also offers excellent Viennese cuisine.

Description:
This is a very nice old-fashioned Wiener Beisl in the Spittelberg quarter that also provides great food and a nice garden surrounded by beautiful Biedermeier buildings. Frequented by middle-class couples as well as by young professionals, all diners enjoy the slightly kitschy decor with its wooden benches, checkered table cloths and little flower bouquets. On the menu is excellent Viennese cuisine, from Gulasch (beef stew seasoned with paprika) to Tafelspitz (boiled beef).
Day Note:
Take a day to wander around the Lainzer Tiergarten, a preserve full of local wildlife that dates back to the 1500s. There are several full-menu restaurants/cafes located within the preserve. There is also an observation tower to view the park and the city. Public transportation to and from the Tiergarten is cheap and convenient.
Day Note:
For a grand finale, visit the Belvedere palace on your last day in Vienna. The grounds alone are reason enough, but you can also opt to only tour the upper or lower part of the palace for a cheaper admission ticket and less time. Have a sandwich at Artner before heading out of town.read more
