Description:

  • The lushly landscaped grounds that surround this grand Belle Epoque stone mansion are only a fraction of what they once were when wealthy Spaniard banker Fernando Rioja took residence in 1910. Originally spanning 4 blocks, with a classical facade dominated by stout Corinthian columns, this palace took opulence to a new level during its time. It's well worthwhile taking one of the daily tours (around 30 min., in Spanish only) to absorb the grandeur of elite life during the early 20th century. The rich interiors, made of oak and intricately carved stone, feature a split double staircase and baroque, rococo, and Chesterfield furniture imported from Spain and France. The palace hosts a range of classical concerts and theater performances in addition to screening movies.
