Description:
St. Blaise's collection of sacral art and relics is in the sacristy off the sanctuary and rather fascinating in a macabre sort of way. It is filled with hundreds of the church's 370 relics (mostly bones) from about 200 saints, as well as vestments and other church objects. Most are displayed in glass reliquaries, one of which reputedly holds the tongue of St. Mary of Egypt. Even if viewing piles of bones is not your thing, consider visiting the treasury to see the 14th-century polyptych of Blessed Leon Bembo, who had a reputation for healing the sick before and after death, and whose preserved body is on view in the exhibit next door. The panel was painted by Paolo Veneziano in 1321 and was used as the lid to Blessed Leon's coffin. The exhibit is well marked, and both it and the mummies were brought to Vodnjan because they were in danger of being desecrated.
