Tunnel Vision: The Other Side of the Caldecott

Tunnel Vision: The Other Side of the Caldecott

Description:

There is life on the other side of the Caldecott -- nature, great restaurants, and a Nobel Prize-winning playwright's home.

Day Note:

There is life on the other side of the Caldecott Tunnel! Spend a day at Mount Diablo State Park. Wend your way to the summit (3,849 feet), where a museum made of sandstone sits, and then stop at Rock City, a location filled with caves ready for exploration. Take in dinner at Lark Creek restaurant, before a relaxing evening at your hotel.

This is a beautiful wilderness area with dozens of hiking trails that reach over 3,000 feet in elevation. Needless to say, the park offers unsurpassable views of the San Francisco Bay Area as far away as Yosemite. The park's Summit Museum and Visitor Center features a variety of exhibits and literature on the park and its history.

    Description:

Eugene O'Neil wrote his most tortured plays, The Iceman Cometh and A Long Day's Journey into Night, while living in this house that, fittingly, has a view of Mount Diablo. Tao House itself is an odd amalgam of a mission-style house with an Asian-style black-glazed tile roof. O'Neil built the house with his Nobel Prize money and in honor of Taoism, the religion he practiced. Exhibits within trace the story of his life. Access is via a van ride from Danville's city parking lot.
