U Street
The U Street corridor runs along U Street NW and is centered at the intersection of U Street and 14th Street NW, where it has reclaimed its prominence in local culture. This is one of the fastest-growing areas in DC, with a vibrant nightlife and lots of cool shops and galleries to explore. Offerings include furniture, records, baked goods, art, vintage and modern fashion. The African American Civil War Memorial is here, as is the Black Fashion Museum. Check out Go Mama Go! for fun gift ideas, and head to the Black Cat for live shows, DJs and a round or two of pool. Down the road from here is Nightclub 9:30, where famous indie and rock bands come to play - everything from Sondre Lerche to ZZ Top.
In this neighborhood you'll also find the famous Bohemian Caverns, a jazz club that, since its inception over 80 years ago, has hosted the likes of Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane. The upstairs decks at Local 16 and Marvin are popular spots in the summer. Laid back restaurants like Creme Cafe have excellent happy hour specials (and bottomless mimosas at brunch on the weekends). Cork is a great spot as well, with hundreds of different wines and delicious small plates. Rice is a good option for vegetarians, serving up spicy and flavorful Thai-influenced cuisine.
