Vermilion

• We don't get out to Old Town as much as we used to, but we had a highly pleasant experience once before at Vermilion and decided the restaurant might be the perfect spot to celebrate our 27th anniversary. And we were right -- especially since I made the reservation through Open Table and added a note about our special occasion. From the greeter at the door to the window seat for two to the waiter who was helpful and pleasant but not intrusive, we were made to feel like valued customers. As for the food, it is true that not one of the appetizers appealed to my tastebuds -- veal sweetbreads and exotic olives are not my bag. But the carrot ginger soup and the porkbelly salad hit the spot as did the halibut and steak entrees. The small dish offering of couscous with mint was a pleasant surprise. As was the complimentary dessert of little fried doughnuts stuffed with riccota and served with fig jam. We never felt rushed even as the restaurant filled up, the noise level was fine and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The topper: A note from the staff wishing us a happy anniversary! They certainly know how to encourage diners to return. And we will.
