My suggestion for affordable but nice would probably be the Kingsgate Hotel. It's a chain with a number of other hotels around New Zealand and they all have a similar high standard. Don't expect 5 star accommodation, they're more a comfortable overnight-type hotel; but are excellent value for money.

The Kingsgate in Wellington is located in Thorndon and is an easy walk from the CBD and Westpac Stadium. It's also very close to the bus, train, and ferry terminals, Parliament buildings and Botanical Gardens.

Their rackrate is really expensive (some $2-$300) but if you book online and a few weeks in advance then you'll get doubles for under $100 and sometimes under $70. This includes parking.

Note though, come the Rugby World Cup in October, these rates will sky rocket!
