Description:
One of the great places to sample traditional, down-home Virginia cooking, the Old Chickahominy House is a reconstructed 18th-century house with mantels from old Gloucester homes and wainscoting from Carter's Grove Plantation. Floors are bare oak, and walls, painted in traditional Colonial colors, are hung with gilt-framed 17th- and 18th-century oil paintings. Three adjoining rooms house an antiques/gift shop. The entire effect is cozy and charming. Before making my rounds, I always opt for the plantation breakfast of real Virginia ham with two eggs, biscuits, cured country bacon and sausage, grits, and coffee or tea. At lunch, Miss Melinda's special is a cup of Brunswick stew with Virginia ham on hot biscuits, fruit salad, homemade pie, and tea or coffee. Also check out the Shirley Pewter Shop next door.
