Don't let looks deceive -- at the corner of Portage and Main rises the Fairmont, whose graceless concrete facade disguises a stylish luxury hotel: The lobby is a study in understated chic, a savvy aesthetic that extends to many of the hotel guest rooms. If it's in the budget, step up to the Fairmont Deluxe rooms, Suites, or Gold rooms, which were completely refurbished in 2003. Stocked with lots of extras (the two-room suites have five phones and two TVs), these rooms feature all-new furniture with walls and upholstery in muted, restful colors. Standard rooms are also comfortable (though they march to a different aesthetic) and offer a choice of two doubles or one queen-size bed. Wheelchair-accessible rooms are also available. The Fairmont is attached to an underground arcade with shops and services, and offers an indoor pool and an extensive selection of exercise equipment. The opulent Velvet Glove Restaurant features luxurious dining amid gilt-framed portraits, wood paneling, and brass torchières.
