Description:
- Winslow carries with it an interesting history but has also been transformed into what looks like just another town by the introduction of Wal-mart and an array of chain restaurants. To see the history, drive into town past the highway exit until you see mom-and-pop type shops and old hotels. La Posada hotel is the oldest in the region and offers good food and drinks as well as accomodations for a calm and luxerious night's rest. The Old Trails Historic Museum is located in a bank from the 1920's with its original marble floor and finishings. There you can view Anasazi, Hopi, and Navajo artifacts, old Western clothing and traveling gear, and other Route 66 historical relics. Nearby is Clear Creek, an excellent place for canoing, hiking, and swimming, and Homolovi Ruins, an old, abandoned site of the Hopi. If you travel less than sixty miles farther up Route 87, you reach Second Mesa, AZ, the middle Hopi Mesas above which three villages sit--Shongopovi, Shipaulovi, and Mishongnovi. Winslow lies about sixty-five miles from Flagstaff on Interstate 40.
