It might be said that the best cheap hotels in Yosemite aren't hotels at all. The reasons for coming to Yosemite National Park are not the hotels or restaurants but what's outside them. Some folks will want to spend hundreds on an Ahwahnee stay, while a short distance away, others could stay for weeks for the same outlay. One doesn't need to spend a lot to have a fine park experience.
The least expensive overnights are had by backpackers, who can pick up a free Wilderness permit and enjoy Yosemite backcountry for as long as their groceries hold out. Of course, this means you'll need to invest in some good, lightweight backpack gear. It's possible to spend a bit less on a cheap tent and bargain sleeping bag, and put down $20/night for a front-country campsite in Yosemite Valley or elsewhere. These are very popular so plan ahead.
The next step up for bargain hunters would include the Valley's Housekeeping Camp -simple 3-sided shelters near the river, and the famed tent cabins of Curry Village. Both facilities offer basic accommodations; they're not for everyone, but they're very popular with some visitors who'll come back to the same units year after year. Outside the park, everyone likes the Bug Hostel which has varied levels of lodging, and the several gateways (especially Oakhurst and Mariposa) have a range of motels to fit most budgets.
