Yosemite is the kind of place that's got many options for kid-friendly and family-friendly accommodations in and near the park. There are so many things for families to do in this mountain setting and places to stay have developed accordingly. Hotel/camp units like Housekeeping Camp, Tuolumne Meadows Lodge and Curry Village are great family settings with immediate access to the outdoors. In Tuolumne Meadows, lodgers will hear the song of the Dana Fork of the Tuolumne River all night. In Housekeeping or Curry it might be coyotes that serenade at night while you and the kids awake to the sweet music of a tanager or the squawk of a jay.
Camping is terrific for family bonding and for young ones to make early connections with nature. Despite attachments to hand-held digital games, TV and computers kids still know how to play with sticks, pine cones, streams and leaves and to be fully entertained in a campsite in the woods. If you haven't camped with kids before, consider getting a campsite adjacent to friends who have had this experience. Campgrounds in the Valley are generally 'busier', while a place like Tamarack Flat is quiet, isolated and peacefully wild. Either way, there's nothing at home or in a standard hotel that compares with the family experience of sitting around the campfire at night, while stars shine through the pines overhead.
