Top 10:

Hotels Near South Entrance (Wawona), Yosemite National Park, CA

  • The Best of NileGuide
  • The best places to stay near Yosemite's south entrance include a range of good options from camping by the Merced South Fork, to a historic hotel built for stage traffic, to a modern conference center/resort. The virtues of staying in the Wawona/Fish Camp area include that it's an hour closer to LA than is Yosemite Valley, a quieter pace than the busier Valley, and quick access to the powerful Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, some good hiking, fishing and even golf.

Wawona Hotel has been a legendary destination for over a hundred years. Its tall white columns, wrap-around porches, hilltop setting, and historic dining room create a unique mountain lodging experience. Pianist/historian Tom Bopp entertains in the lobby most evenings and adds a veneer of genuine hospitality heritage. Its location as the anchor of the park's southern community is a prime reason to base a visit at Wawona Hotel.

Just outside the park boundary, in Fish Camp is the destination resort of Tenaya Lodge. It can be a base for a business conference or for several days of family fun. Good dining options, an emphasis on service, trails that leave from the back door and immediate access to Yosemite's entrance gate are among its plusses.

Wawona Campground is right on the river, as are some of the rental cabins/homes of The Redwoods, which are scattered around the Wawona community of a few hundred private in-holdings. The small settlement of Fish Camp has a handful of bed and breakfasts, and a bit further off are the many motels of Oakhurst in the foothills.
