There are occasions when a retreat to the mountains should be done in the grandest of styles and Yosemite's luxury hotels should be sought out. The discerning traveler knows that a national park has limitations on the scale of opulent facilities and that these remote mountains come with challenges to an excess of amenities. Nonetheless, there are some very, very comfortable places from which to base a Yosemite visit. You can get a massage, indulge in a spa, have a concierge arrange theater tickets or choose from a deep list of quality wines and sleep in high thread-count sheets.
When the Queen of England sought a western resort for a U.S. trip in 1984, her staff selected Yosemite's Ahwahnee Hotel above a long list of top-notch lodgings in several states. This is one of the grand park lodges that has long upheld a tradition of wild grandeur. Just about a mile away is the Yosemite Lodge, a newer facility that is unremarkable in some ways but comes with an excellent restaurant and avant-garde 'green' motel rooms.
Not far outside Yosemite's southern boundary is the deluxe Tenaya Lodge. Because it's outside the park it has been able to build more features typically found at an upscale hotel. A bit further away, at the edge of Oakhurst is one of the region's superb facilities, the Chateau de Sureau, a fine touch of Europe in the oak woodland of the foothills.
The aforementioned innate limits of the mountain setting and the seasonality of visitation have so far restricted the luxury listings to the few places like these. It can pay to search area bed and breakfast or vacation home rentals as some of these are quite nice.
