Though a central destination only in the winter, there is lots of good stuff near Yosemite's Badger Pass. Badger was one of the first developed ski areas in the West, really a pioneer in America's growing winter recreation industry back in the 1930's. It's a small ski area but still popular, especially for those learning to ski or snowboard. Hundreds of miles of backcountry skiing possibilities surround Badger, mostly off to the east. Popular overnight ski destinations include the Glacier Point Hut and the Ostrander Lake Ski Hut.
In the summer, Badger itself is closed off to visitors, but continuing beyond it brings one to the jaw-dropping overlook of Glacier Point, where one can look down 3000' to the floor of Yosemite Valley and 20 miles east to the snowy crest of the Sierra Nevada. Some of Yosemite's famed waterfalls are in view below where you stand. On the way out to Glacier Point a one-mile trail rewards the hiker with the world-class 360° view from the top of Sentinel Dome.
Other hiking trails take off from Glacier Point Road, for both casual dayhikes and multi-day backpack trips. The Pohono Trail goes along the south rim of Yosemite Valley, with several viewpoints en route. Taft Point is a quieter overlook than Glacier Point, with a unique view down on El Capitan.
Across Highway 41, those who study their map will find the road up to Henness Ridge Fire Lookout, another fine high point. The community of Yosemite West here includes numerous cabin and condo rentals. Bridalveil Campground, along the Glacier Point Road provides another place from which to base a visit in the Badger Pass region.
