Coming into Yosemite from the northwest on Highway 120 means being in proximity to lots of good things to do near the mountain town of Groveland. Dating back to Gold Rush days, Groveland sits in the transition zone between the Sierra foothills and the tall conifers of the middle mountain elevations. There are some nice places to stay here and to play here, on both sides of the park boundary.
Much of the Groveland area is surrounded by Stanislaus National Forest, a worthy recreation destination overshadowed by adjoining Yosemite. The national forest is managed for multiple uses, but recreation is surely a prime element. There's boating, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, campgrounds, picnic areas, whitewater, XC skiing, snowshoeing and more.
The Tuolumne River comes out of the park downstream of the huge Hetch Hetchy Valley and flows north of Groveland in a stretched that's famed for whitewater rafting and kayaking. Commercial outfitters put in off of Ferretti Road, which drops from Hwy. 120 deep down into the river canyon. Within the park, Hetch Hetchy is well worth a visit; it's uncrowded and is a historical and natural gem-though substantially altered by the fact that the floor of the valley is under the waters of a reservoir.
Inside Yosemite, Groveland guests aren't far from the Tuolumne and the Merced Groves of giant sequoia trees. There's a campground at Hodgdon Meadow immediately inside the park gate. Crane Flat has a nice summer campground, snowshoe and ski trails, and a fire lookout that's worth the 3-mile round-trip.
