Some of the best things to do in/near Tuolumne Meadows are some of the best things in California. The cool high country is a welcome summer retreat from the Golden State's baking heat, especially when thunderheads build in the afternoon over the Sierra crest and add 'higher Sierras' to the gorgeous mountain landscape. You will even find people who consider Tuolumne to be the center of the universe. It's that special to so many who grew up camping, hiking and fishing here or who learned to light a campfire, first fixed pro for a climb on Cathedral Peak, who saw their first bear, or who never lost the memory of the bright stars in the clear air and light-free sky at night.
In winter the Tioga Road corridor is closed to cars but open to backcountry skiers who appreciate the bunks and firewood in the free ski hut and the big open slopes of Unicorn Peak for carving tele turns.
Tuolumne is a nexus of high country trails for great day hikes and for weeks- or months-long through-hikes of the John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail. There are easy strolls along Lyell Canyon, moderate outings like Cathedral Lake or Lembert Dome, and burly hauls up Mt. Dana or Mt. Gibbs. Lembert Dome isn't a long hike, but is a steep route and the air is thin at 9000', but the scene from this granite viewing platform is world-class. Cathedral Peak is a landmark for the region, was one of Muir's toughest ascents and remains a cherished classic among today's rockclimbers.
