Description:

Next to Curry Village in Yosemite Valley is where you find the summertime raft rental spot.  The shuttle buses stop right in front of it.  When the NPS deems the river safe, you can rent a small raft, carry it over to the Merced River and drift on downstream.  You'll get a lifejacket and paddles - and a shuttle ride back up to the put-in.  If you bring a picnic or snacks, be extra careful to hang on to all your litter - and don't feed the park's ducks, squirrels, etc.  Drinking water and sunscreen are a good idea.  Depending on water level and how many stops you want to make, this can be a 2-6 hour journey.  A sign marks the place you want to put ashore to meet the returning shuttle.
Floating downstream is a delightfully different way to see Yosemite Valley.  You get different views, you're down as low as you can get beneath the waterfalls and cliffs, you'll see things that aren't on the maps or visible from the roads.  Bring a camera (and a zip-lock bag for it) for sure.  There's only one tiny 'rapid' where you slide under the left side of Superintendent's Bridge.
