Alberta Travel Guide

Mountains. Cowboys. Dinosaur Fossils. Alberta is the rugged stuff North America is made of. Canada’s second largest province is its wealthiest and fastest growing, thanks to a boom in crude oil production. But while its cities expand and its population swells, Alberta retains its down-to-earth Western attitude and its unadorned, wild good looks. The Canadian Rockies run down the Western border, a heaven for the outdoorsy and a haven for wilderness lovers. Ski, hike or cycle alongside moose, sheep and bears, making your base in mountain towns Banff and Jasper, both home to national parks. You don’t need to be a paleontologist to get stoked on the dinosaur delights and prehistoric wonders of Drumheller’s Royal Tyrrell Museum. Delve into the canyons of Lethbridge or laze in luxury around glacier-kissed Lake Louise. Need a little big-city action? Capital Edmonton is eager to oblige, with hip neighborhoods like Old Strathcona, as well as North America’s biggest shopping mall. And of course there’s Calgary, the booming, oil-pumping heart of Alberta, where you feast on free pancakes til your belly bursts during the Calgary Stampede. No wonder Alberta wrangles so many hearts.
