“Natural State” indeed. But a hotbed of music and culture too? You bet. Tucked into the geographical heart of America like a secret, Arkansas doesn’t get a lot of hype, or visitors—which means you’ll get its mountains, valleys, forests and rivers all to yourself. Hike through the Ozarks and Ouachita National Forest. Canoe down the free-flowing Buffalo River. Take a soak in the historic Hot Springs National Park. Get down and dirty in the Delta Region, and stop by capital Little Rock for big-city attractions with small-town charm. Here’s another Arkansas secret: its culture is far more dynamic than reputed. The home state of American icons Bill Clinton and Johnny Cash, Arkansas’ cultural heritage is best experienced through its music: blues, bluegrass, country and folk. Its diverse roots go right down to the name itself, the French pronunciation for the Native American Siouxan word for “land of downriver people.” Scratch the surface for yourself, and get to know one of the most humble states in the Union.
