Perhaps not as well known for their coffee as for their wine, it’s hard to order a bad ‘café’ in Barcelona (or Spain for that matter). Whether you want a Cortado (espresso with milk), Espresso, Café con Leche or an Americano, (long espresso), most coffee shops around the city serve a rich and very flavourful cup. And if you’re looking for a place to relax with a book, chat with a friend or even do a bit of work, there are several options.
If you’re in the Born neighborhood check out Cafe Del Born. This rustic, friendly cafe situated on the edge of Passeig Del Born is a great place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They open at 8am (earlier than most Barcelona cafes) and have a delicious varied menu including croissants for breakfast and a ‘menu del dia’ for lunch (three course meal from between 8-12 euros). They also give you 45 minutes of free wi-fi but if you ask for more it’s usually not an issue.
Another excellent Barcelona cafe, not far from the Born and near Palau de La Musica, is Al Sur. The front of the bar consists of a row of booths along with a few table tops and bar stools (great for working), while the back has several comfy couches and cushions, ideal for lounging, drinking and relaxing. Al Sur has free wi-fi and even if you just order a coffee you can stay for as long you want.
If you’re in the mood for a French vibe in the heart of Barcelona, check out En Aparte. Situated close to Arc De Triomph, on the edge of the Born, the wooden tables, leather chairs and tiled floors in this bar/café/restaurant, provide for an inviting and charming atmosphere. Jazz music permeates the air while the French staff approach each table when they arrive with the only menu on hand; a large chalkboard. The cuisine, a mix of Spanish and French fusion is excellent and so is their selection of national and international wines. Their house Bordeaux is especially good and goes well with the Comte cheese.
