Great North Region

The crown of the state, or better branded by the locals as the “North Country,” this area is a retreat for outdoorsmen and nature lovers. The expansive wilderness and rural atmosphere make it a naturalist's and sportsman's sanctuary for fishing, hunting, hiking and boating. The Great North is best known for its snowmobiling trails and moose sightings. You might just spot one as you pass the iconic “Break for Moose” signs. In Pittsburg, make your way to Moose Alley for a moose tour, where snow stomping is the loudest noise and hunting and fishing dominate the land. Think you've experienced first rate fishing before? Fish where the Connecticut River begins in Pittsburg and catch some rainbow trout and landlocked salmon. Nearby Lake Umbagog along coastal Maine, offers anglers the chance to catch small mouth bass. Other tidbits about the Great North? There is endless lumber and paper mill-owned acreage and one of its towns, Dixville, is home to the first votes in the Presidential primary. Endless cultural activities abound; St. Kiernan Community Center for the Arts in Berlin showcases plays, concerts, historic exhibits, lectures, ethnic festivals, art gatherings and boat tours. A short drive away, the Northern Forest Heritage Park is the oldest continuous logging operation. Got the photography bug? Meander down to Stark Bridge if you're a covered bridge enthusiast and snap away at this unique sighting on the National Register of Historic places. Interested in some water fun? Ride the rapids of the Saco or Androscoggin Rivers by renting a raft or taking a guided cruise. Go out on a limb, literally, and seek out Table Rock, a granite outcrop that hangs 2510 feet over the depths of Dixville Notch. You can even explore the spectacular beauty of Dixville Notch State Park. While you're at it sojourn over to the Grand Balsams Resort Hotel in Colebrook surrounded by the solitude of the craggy New Hampshire mountains. Want to see beyond the Great North region? Find Magalloway's Tower which offers scenic daytime views of Canada, Maine and Vermont from the summit and a black starry sky at night. No wonder the Great North Region is known for its lakefront real estate as primary or secondary homes. The region's undiscovered wonders leave a lasting impression.
